The solution to strengthening your impaired driving crashes is to SHOW how the crash could have been avoided or severity decreased by a non-impaired driver.  To do this you can apply the nearly lost art of time and distance evaluation and calculations.  

Most law enforcement officers are discouraged to attempt much in-depth time and distance and end the wreck investigation when impact speeds are calculated.  WHY? WHY IGNORE something that can be so beneficial to your case?

The answer is simple, most investigators simply were not properly trained in time and distance during their initial phases of reconstruction.  Instructors trying to cover a LOT of material in a SHORT period of time is a recipe for DISASTER when it comes to you fully understanding time and distance.
I was the same way.  I could calculate a few problems on a worksheet or on a test well enough to get by but I really didn't know what I was calculating or why.  

I was content with determining the speed the car was going.  Then one day I investigated a fatal crash and a member of the family asked me, "What happened" and "Why?" and I really didn't have an answer for either.  

I knew I had to figure out how to properly analyze a crash beyond an impact speed.

Course Agenda

  • DAY 1: During the first day of the course the usual administrative and registration procedures will take course and then students will receive a reconstruction math review and then a comprehensive explanation of time and distance formulas and calculations.  After that an introduction to using Microsoft Excel will be covered and then students will practice programming time and distance formulas in Excel.
  • DAY 2: Once day 2 rolls around a short review from the previous day's material will be conducted and then students will receive information on the sequence of events to account for during a time and distance analysis, perception response times for specific types of crashes, and what all should be account for during the time and distance analysis based on the crash type.  The last few hours of the day will be spent covering video basics and how to incorporate surveillance footage into the time and distance analysis.
  • DAY 3: The third day will be spent tying all of the information together.  Students will apply the information learned so far to multiple real-world crashes using case files.  The objective for each case file will be to determine the crash type, perception response time for the driver involved in the crash, explain the factors of the crash, identify how the crash could have been avoided, and then program the crash into Excel and analyze using multiple variables to demonstrate how the driver's impairment played a role in the crash.    
  • ​DAY 4: The final day the students will complete the final graded course project.  Students will receive a case file in which they will have to interpret, analyze, and then explain their findings in a narrative report.  Once completed the project will be reviewed by the instructor and graded.  At the completion of the case projects the end of course administrative tasks such as course review and distribution of certificates will take place.
